Zarautz - Pais Vasco (The Basque Country)

Pais Vasco or The Basque Country on Spain's northern coast is where the green hills meet the Atlantic beaches. It borders France in the east and Cantabria in the west. The cliffs along this stretch of coast are broken by rocky coves, rias, and wide bays with sandy beaches interspersed with fishing villages. Zarautz is located around 10 miles west of San Sebastian, easily reached off the main A-8 coastal highway, on the north coast of the Basque country.

Zarautz is a town in the province of Guipuzcoa and is a popular tourist destination. Its exellent beach is one of the longest of the Cantabrian coast with waves making it a paradise for surf lovers. It has an interesting historic quarter with the Gothic tower of Luzea, the medieval church of Santa Maria la Real and the Renaissance palace of Narros, the summer residence of Queen Isabella II. The city has numerous ancestral homes, the Portu Palace on the shore of the Cantabrian Sea is 16th century. The local cuisine is one of the most exquisite and famous in the whole Basque Country. This old settlement of whale hunters became an important tourist village in the 19th century.
