Worksop attractions

		Worksop lies in Nottinghamshire, one of the counties of the East Midlands. The area is famous for its association with Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest, and the county town of Nottingham with its football teams and the Trent Bridge cricket ground. Nottinghamshire borders South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. It is sheltered by the Pennines to the west and features a number of rivers running through wide flat valleys, including the Trent, Idle, Erewash and Soar. The centre and south west of the county, around Sherwood Forest, features undulating hills with ancient oak woodland.

	Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire - S44 6PR. Bolsover Castle, perched high on a wooded hillside near Chesterfield is an enchanting place to visit. William the Conqueror gave Bolsover Castle to his bailiff, William Peveril, who is believed to have built a keep where Bolsover Castle now stands. Visitors can enjoy the elaborate fireplaces, panelling and wall paintings, and see the early indoor riding school linked to the castle with a range of buildings including a gallery. In Bolsover, 7 miles west of Worksop on A632. Off M1 at junction 29 (signposted). English Heritage.

	Chesterfield Canal Trust. The Trust aims to promote the full restoration and development of the Chesterfield Canal. Already the Chesterfield Canal has much to offer; the 46-mile canal has narrow locks, wide locks, and tunnels. It originally ran from the River Trent at West Stockwith to Chesterfield. It is currently only navigable as far as Kiveton Park near Rotherham. The section near Chesterfield offers the Tapton Lock Visitor Centre at Tapton Lock, Lockoford Lane, CHESTERFIELD, Derbyshire, S41 7JB. Tel: 01246 551035.
