Wooler is an attractive small stone-built town perched high above the Wooler Water and the natural gateway to the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park. From its main street formed by the Market Place and High Street, three roads lead off through the foothills into the National Park. The busy main street with its inns, specialist shops, working pottery and grocery stores, is the leading shopping centre in the area. Attractions St. Cuthbert's Cave is a dramatic sandstone cave formed under an overhang of rocks. It is here that St. Cuthbert's body is said to have been taken by the monks of Lindisfarne Priory in 875, during their flight from the vikings. The cave is in St. Cuthbert's Cave Wood, a National Trust Property. About 7 miles northeast of Wooler.

Attractions Ros Castle (Chillingham). This Iron Age settlement stands in a commanding position on the highest hill in the area. It is defended by one rampart made of earth and stone, with a ditch around the south and east sides. About 6 miles east of Wooler.

Attractions The Chillingham Wild Cattle are one of the original herds of emparked wild cattle and still roam in their natural surroundings over about 300 acres of Chillingham Park in Northumberland. Though their origin is uncertain, the existing herd is thought to have been at Chillingham for at least the past 700 years. About 7 miles east of Wooler.
