Wigton is in the centre of the Solway Plain, situated between the Caldbeck Fells and the Solway coast. The market town evolved from a pre-medieval street plan, which can still be traced today. There is a triangular market place, once the centre of the Medieval town. Many of the buildings around the market place are of Georgian style, and the upper storeys have altered little. Wigton is the birthplace of the writer Melvin Bragg, who has written extensively on Wigton, referring to it in his writings as Thurston). Sequences from "A Time to Dance" were set in and filmed in the town. Wigton has a variety of shops, most are family owned. The covered market takes place on a Tuesday at the Market Hall. Wheyrigg Hall Hotel, Wheyrigg, Bassenthwaite, CA7 0DH
	An award-winning, family-run hotel a 10-minute drive to the sea, the Wheyrigg Hall Hotel is an old converted farmhouse with a garden, a bar and a restaurant. Parking is free. Carlisle and the Bassenthwaite Lake are a 30-minute drive from the Wheyrigg, while Wigton Railway Station is just a 5 minutes' drive away.
