Whitley Bay is in Tyne & Wear, a county bounded
on the east by the North Sea, and bordering Northumberland to
the north and County Durham to the south. It is located around
the mouths of the Rivers Tyne and Wear, two rivers that have
played a key role in the development of the area. The Romans
were the first to realise the potential of their success by using
the rivers as a form of defence when they built forts as part
of Hadrian’s Wall. Newcastle upon Tyne and North Tyneside
