Whitchurch is a small town in the north of Shropshire. It was founded by the Romans who called it called Mediolanum (the place in the middle of the plain) and chose it for its strategic location. It is a crossroads for roads from Nantwich, Chester and Shrewsbury. The current name comes from the phrase White church, referring to an old church from Norman times made from white stone, the current church of St. Alkmunds stands on the site of the Norman church. This market town has many splendid buildings dating from medieval, tudor and georgian times, it has a pleasantly wooded Victoria Jubilee Park and picturesque Memorial Garden. The Whitchurch firm of J B Joyce was established in 1690 and continues to make magnificent tower clocks here today. Their clocks have an international reputation and can be found on cathedrals and palaces around the world. Station: WHITCHURCH. 1mile. From the south, leave the M6 at Jct 10A onto the M54 for Telford. Leave the M54 at Jct 3 and take the A41 north for Whitchurch. 25 miles later you reach the Whitchurch bypass, continue clockwise around the south of the town following signs for A49 North. At the end of the bypass you reach a roundabout where the B5476 goes right to Whitchurch and the A49 continues left. Take the 1st exit left along the A49, and the hotel is first on your right
