Wetherby attractions

		Wetherby lies in Yorkshire, the largest of all England's counties. In the northwest of the county lies the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a lovely patchwork of limestone hills, gentle valleys and the high peaks of Whernside, Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough. The classical Yorkshire Dales spread to the north from the market and spa towns of Settle, Skipton, Ilkley and Harrogate in North Yorkshire, with most of the larger southern dales such as Ribblesdale, Malhamdale and Airedale, Wharfedale and Nidderdale running roughly parallel from north to south, and the more northerly dales including Wensleydale, Swaledale and Teesdale running generally from west to east. The North York Moors is the county's other national park, with bleak upland moors and a magnificent rugged coastline. To the southeast of the region lie the Yorkshire Wolds, formed from chalk hills that arc from the Humber estuary west of Kingston upon Hull up to the North Sea coast between Bridlington and Scarborough.

	The Racecourse, York Road, Wetherby, West Yorkshire LS22 5EJ Tel: 01937 582 035. Wetherby racecourse is a National Hunt racecourse situated near Wetherby. It is unique in Yorkshire as it is the only racecourse that is just National Hunt. www.wetherbyracing.co.uk. On the outskirts of Wetherby.

	Spofforth Castle, Spofforth, Harrogate, North Yorkshire Tel. 0870 331 1181 The ruins of a hall range are all that remain from a fortified house. The site had been the home of the Percy family since Norman times. There is a 14th century two-storey chamber to the north of the hall that has a polygonal stair turret on the north-west corner. The main hall was rebuilt in the 15th century. It is in the care of English Heritage. About 3 miles northwest of Wetherby.

	Harewood House, Harewood, Leeds LS17 9LG Tel: 0113 218 1010 Harewood House is home to the Queen's cousin, the Earl of Harewood. The House is set in spectacular grounds with formal gardens, a sweeping terrace and woodland walks. There is an outstanding art collection, splendid State Rooms and a fascinating 'Below Stairs' exhibition. An unusual feature is the Bird Garden. www.harewood.org. About 6 miles west of Wetherby.

	Bramham Park, Wetherby, LS23 6ND Tel: 01937 846 000. A splendid Queen Anne mansion near Wetherby containing collections of furniture, porcelain and paintings. Set in 66 acres of formal grounds and 100 acres of pleasure grounds. www.bramhampark.co.uk. About 5 miles south of Wetherby.

	Knaresborough Castle is beautifully positioned high on a cliff overlooking the River Nidd, very close to the centre of Knaresborough. Also on site is the Courthouse Museum in one of the Castle's oldest buildings. The King's Tower, which also houses the dungeon, still stands. Location: About 5 miles north of Wetherby.

	The Christmas Adventure, Stockeld Park, Wetherby, Yorkshire LS22 4AW. Eco ice rink, Santa's Grotto, Ice Bar Cafe, fresh Christmas tree store and Christmas gift shop, you can now visit the Enchanted Wood, a mixture of theatre and fantasy, ski on our nordic cross country ski trail, and lose yourself in our huge illuminated hedge maze, and for the first time ever, you can experience our magnificent firework display.
