Hertford Castle, SG14 1HR. Tel: 01992 584322.
The building often referred to as Hertford Castle is in fact
the gatehouse. The castle itself no longer stands but occupied
the enclosed area behind the gatehouse. For 300 years a Royal
Palace stood within the flint walls having previously been one
of a series of castles built for defence purposes. James I of
Scotland was a prisoner at Hertford Castle, as were the Templars.
Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood at both Hatfield
House and Hertford Castle. Location:
3 miles east of Welwyn Garden in the centre of Hertford. |

Knebworth
House, Knebworth, Hertfordshire SG3 6PY. Tel: +44 01438 812661.
Knebworth House is unique - originally a red-brick Tudor manor
house, it was transformed in 1843 into the gothic fantasy we
see today, with turrets, griffins and gargoyles. A walk from
room to room is a journey back in time. Knebworth is easily accessible
by all forms of transport from most areas of the UK. www.knebworthhouse.com. About 4 miles north of Welwyn Garden City. |

private chapel. Visitors can enjoy the scented garden and fountains,
and view the famous knot garden adjoining the Tudor Old Palace
where Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. About 3 miles south of Welwyn Garden City. |
