The statue of King Charles I, south of Trafalgar
Square, marks the point for measuring the distance to and from
London. A plaque can be found on the ground behind the statue
stating that mileage distances on road signage are still measured
from here. It marks the site one of the original memorial crosses
erected by King Edward in memory of wife Queen Eleanor, who died
in 1290. The cross standing outside Charing Cross Station is
a replica of the original, made in 1863. Historians believe the
original was not as ornate as the one seen today. In
Trafalgar Square. |
