The Rochdale Canal stretches from central Manchester to Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire, passing through some extraordinary countryside in its 32 miles.
The canal starts at Castlefield at its junction with the lock-free Bridgewater Canal. Nearby is the Museum of Science and Industry and the Hilton Hotel or Beetham Tower which dominates the Manchester skyline. The canal weaves its way through the middle of Manchester, often overlooked by new appartments and office buildings. Canal Street, as the name suggests borders the Rochdale Canal and has many bars and restaurants in the world famous Gay Village. The canal emerges from a tunnel past Ancoats, a newly renovated area of the city.
