Swindon attractions

		From Swindon you can explore the Cotswolds and the south/ southwest of England. Wiltshire borders the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. Salisbury Plain is famous as the location of Stonehenge stone circle and other ancient landmarks such as the large henge and stone circles surrounding the village of Avebury. The city of Salisbury is notable for its cathedral and the county town is Trowbridge. Salisbury, in the south of the county is less than 30 miles from the south coast. Swindon, in the north of the county is easily accessed along the M4.

Regular train rides on Sundays throughout the year and on many Public Holidays. The Swindon & Cricklade Railway also offers Driving Experiences for those who would like to take the controls of a steam or diesel locomotive. swindon-cricklade-railway.org. About 2 miles north west of Swindon.

	Lydiard House, Lydiard Park, Lydiard Tregoze, Swindon, SN5 3PA. Tel: 01793 770401. Small stately home where visitors tour the elegant ground floor apartments which are decorated with ornate plasterwork and original family furnishings and paintings. Gift shop, Adventure playground, Café, Visitors centre, Lake and woodland walks, Picnic area. Location: On the outskirts of Swindon.

	Ashdown House, Lambourn, Newbury, Berkshire RG17 8RE. Tel: 01793 762209. 17th-century house. Includes an Iron Age hill fort where King Alfred is thought to have battled the Danes. Limited opening times. Visitor access in the house is to staircase (100 steps) and roof only. National Trust. Charges apply. About 6 miles east of Swindon.

	The internationally known Uffington White Horse can been seen for miles away. The figure has remained clear of turf throughout its long existence, except for being covered as a precaution, during the Second World War. Also an Iron Age hill fort named Uffington Castle. National Trust. About 8 miles east of Swindon.

	Avebury Manor & Garden, nr Marlborough, Wiltshire SN8 1RF. Tel: 01672 539250. (Avebury Estate office). 16th-century manor house with lovely Edwardian garden. The manor house is occupied and furnished by private leaseholders, who open a part of it to visitors. Restricted viewing. National Trust. Charges apply. About 9 miles south of Swindon.
