Swanley is two separate places - a
town and a village. The ancient parish and village of Swanley
have now been overtaken by the town, about a mile to the north,
which began life as three houses before the advent of the railway
and the arrival of the Rocheste r- St Mary Cray railway line
in 1861. The hamlet where the station was built had only three
houses in the 1850s but it quickly became known as Swanley Junction.
A new church was built there for the new ecclesiastical parish
that was created to cater for the rapidly expanding population.Also
