Stowmarket attractions

		Stowmarket lies in Suffolk, a county of picturesque well-preserved towns, villages of colour-wash and thatched cottages and a fine selection of medieval churches. Suffolk borders Norfolk to the north, Cambridgeshire to the west and Essex to the south, with the North Sea lying to the east. Its county town is Ipswich and other important towns include Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds. The county is noted for having been the home to two well-regarded painters, Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable - the Stour Valley area is known as "Constable Country" - and the famous composer Benjamin Britten.

	Haughley Park and Gardens, nr Stowmarket, IP14 3JY. Tel: 01359 240701. A seventeenth century house (1620) with park, garden and bluebell wood. The estate now consists of the park and about half of the original woodland and covers 267 acres. About 4 miles west of Stowmarket.
	Mechanical Music Museum and Bygones Trust, Blacksmith Road, Cotton, Nr Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 1QN. Tel: 01449 613876. A selection of fairground organs and pipe organs, street pianos, music boxes, polyphons and many other musical items, housed in a purpose-built building. About 5 miles north of Stowmarket.
	The Guildhall of Corpus Christi, Market Place, Lavenham, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 9QZ. Tel: 01787 247646. Tudor building in the heart of a remarkably preserved small medieval town. Stunning early 16th-century timber-framed building. Local history museum, with exhibitions on medieval cloth industry. National Trust. Charges apply. About 10 miles south west of Stowmarket.
