St Omer

St Omer lies 68 km west-northwest of Lille on the mainline railway to Calais. It stands on a hillside on the edge of the river Aa marshes. The town is named after Saint Omar, who brought Christianity to the area. A market town grew up around the prosperous religious community as the monks drained much of the nearby marshes, which became a fertile farming area. Today farmers from the marshes still bring in by boat their freshly-picked vegetables to sell in St.Omer's markets.
