Southwell lies in Nottinghamshire, one of the counties of the East Midlands. The area is famous for its association with Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest, and the county town of Nottingham with its football teams and the Trent Bridge cricket ground. Nottinghamshire borders South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. It is sheltered by the Pennines to the west and features a number of rivers running through wide flat valleys, including the Trent, Idle, Erewash and Soar. The centre and south west of the county, around Sherwood Forest, features undulating hills with ancient oak woodland.

The Norman nave is said to be one of the finest in Europe. See the new "Angel Window", search for 10 mice carved by Robert Thompson, visit the Chapter House to see the famous "Leaves of Southwell" and carvings of dogs, rabbits and pigs hidden in the foliage.
