Charles Dickens Birthplace, 393 Old Commercial
Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO1 4QL. Charles Dickens was born
in 1812 during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Twenty-five years
later he published his first novel. There are three furnished
rooms: the parlour, the dining room and the bedroom. The Birthplace
is usually closed from November to March except on his birthday,

D-Day Museum, Clarence Esplanade, Southsea
Tel: 023 9282 7261. Opened in 1984 to commemorate the 40th Anniversary
of D-Day. The museum houses The Overlord Embroidery with its
stirring scenes. It measures 272 feet and is the largest work
