Hayling Island is surrounded by the waters of Langstone and Chichester harbours. For many years it was dangerous for local inhabitants to cross these waters to reach the mainland, or take the ferry to Portsmouth from the western end of the Island. In 1824 a wooden road bridge was opened linking the north shore with the mainland. This became a rail link until 1963. A new bridge, built to replace the old wooden one, was opened in 1956.
