The Republic of Ireland
can be geographically divided into 5 areas.
The eastern counties around
Dublin are rich in history with neolithic sites, abbeys, churches,
castles, grand houses and gardens. For walkers, there are the
Wicklow mountains and the best beaches are also in County Wicklow.
The south - eastern counties
are mostly low- lying. Rich pastureland extends to the quiet
coastline of long sandy beaches, where low cliffs edge the deep
bays and mudflats teem with wading birds. The sunny drier climate
attracts visitors to this area, famous for its excellent beaches.
For many, the south - western
counties represent the best that Ireland can offer the holiday
- maker. The counties of Cork and Kerry have beautiful coastlines,
charming towns, a mild climate provided by the Gulf Stream and
lush inland scenery.
The three western counties
of Galway, Clare and Mayo encompass a huge variety of landscapes
and sights. Highlights are the grey - white expanses of bare
limestone in the Burren, and the wild coast and mountains of
Connemara.
