The
Shildon hotels listed below are either in the town or
we have given a rough guide as to how far they are from Shildon.
We hope you enjoy your stay and find your ideal accommodation.
Shildon is a small town in south west
Durham. It is very much a product of the industrial age and is
proud of its railway heritage. The town can trace its links with
the railways back to the early 1800s. It was here that George
Stephensons Locomotion was first placed on
the rails for the inaugural run of the Stockton and Darlington
Railway, and here that Timothy Hackworth built most of his remarkable
locomotives at the Soho Engine Works. The Soho Works was soon
producing engines that were shipped all over the world, including
North America and Russia. Today, Shildon can boast the National
Railway Museum's first ever 'outstation'. Thanks to a multi-million
pound National Lottery award, the impressive 'Locomotion' tourist
attraction opened in 2004. It is the region's first branch of
a national museum and its 6,000 square metre collections centre
houses up to 60 vehicles from the national collection. Also see
