		Saffron Walden lies in the county of Essex, a large county northeast of London with water on 2 sides. It has areas of flat agricultural scenery, undulating and pretty that suited English watercolourists. Narrow lanes wind through meadows past weather-boarded mills and unfenced fields, while flinty church towers can be seen from tree-lined hilltops. There are impressive historic towns such as Colchester to visit and charming villages of old houses such as Thaxted and Dedham.

Mole Hall Wildlife Park was first opened to the public in 1963 and now covers over 20 acres of grounds and gardens, which surround the original moated manor house (private), which dates from 1287. One of the finest surviving medieval barns in eastern England, tree-ring dated to the mid-15th century, with a breathtaking aisled interior and crown post roof, the product of some 400 oaks. 	Audley End House and Gardens, Audley End, Saffron Walden, Essex, CB11 4JF. Tel: 01799 522399. Visitors can see Robert Adam's ornamental garden buildings, and the Elysian Garden cascade. The thriving organic walled Victorian Kitchen Garden - with its box-edged paths, trained fruit and 52m (170ft) long vine house, still as it was in its Victorian heyday - is a memorable part of any visit.
