 From Rye the rural and coastal county of Sussex can
be accessed. The county is now divided into East and West Sussex
and is bounded on the north by Surrey, east by Kent, south by
the English Channel, and west by Hampshire. It is an area with
a fertile coastal plain along which are scattered numerous resort
towns including Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Seaford, Brighton,
Shoreham-by-Sea, Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor. The South
Downs Way runs along the grassy ridge of the South Downs, giving
splendid views over the countryside and the coast over the chalk
cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters. |

 Hastings
Castle, Hastings. After landing in England in 1066, William of
Normandy ordered two fortifications to be built, one being Pevensey
Castle and the other Hastings. The most recent damage done to
the castle was during World War II, when Hastings was a target
for bombing raids. About 9 miles south west of Rye. |
