Cataluna is made up of four provinces - Barcelona, Girona,
Tarragona and Lleida (Lerida), each with a capital city of the
same name. Barcelona is the place people want to visit and the
capital is now very much an international city. The area enjoys
a varied landscape from the high sierras of the Pyrenees, to
the Mediterranean coast and the central lowlands. There are two
Cataluna coastlines - the Costa Brava with its cliffs and deep
coves (Costa is Catalan for coast and Brava means Rugged) - and
the Costa Dorada (Gold Coast) with long, wide and gentle beaches.
There are three airports - Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona. There
are two international rail stations at Estacion de Sants and
Estacion de Francia, both in Barcelona. |
Roses was once the oldest town in Catalonia, founded
by Greek mariners from Rhodes, who named it after their home.
It is set in a perfectly sheltered spot to enjoy the sandy beaches,
against the rocky outcrop of Cape Creus. Roses was still a fishing
village in the fifties, but has since experienced the tourism
boom. There are many attractive features that have been left
over the course of its 3,000-year history; a megalithic park,
the military fortresses from the 16th century, the monastery
Santa Maria de Roses and the Dolmen Creu d'en Cobertella. Visitors
can enjoy the Don Pancho cruise-boats leaving the harbour, touring
the Cap de Creus or going all the way down the Gulf of Roses
to the Illes Medes. There is the Agua Brava aquatic park a few
miles out of town, a go-kart circuit on the coast with a 900
m track and three scuba-diving centres. |
