To its east is Essex, to the west is Buckinghamshire and to the north are Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. In this historical county you will find Britain's first Garden City at Letchworth, Roman remains at St Albans, the undulating chalk hills of the Chilterns, leafy lanes, quaint villages and some of the prettiest landscapes in southern Britain.

Attractions Chiltern Open Air Museum, Newland Park, Gorelands Lane, Chalfont St. Giles, Bucks HP8 4AB, UK +44 (0)1494 871117. The Museum was founded in 1976, with the aim of rescuing threatened buildings and re-erecting them on our forty-five acre site of natural park, meadow and woodland. Our collection consists of more than 30 buildings. www.coam.org.uk. About 1 mile west of Rickmansworth.

Attractions Rickmansworth has a popular theatre, Watersmeet. High Street, Rickmansworth, WD3 1EH. Tel: 01923 711063. The auditorium has a capacity of 481 for theatre productions and conferences, and 200 for cabaret events. It is also hired for craft fairs and exhibitions. Location: In the centre of Rickmansworth.

Attractions Grand Union Canal. The Grand Union Canal main line covers the 137 miles from London and Birmingham. Branches take it to places such as Slough, Leicester, Wendover, Aylesbury and Northampton. One end of the Canal is at Brentford on the River Thames, the other end at Bordesley Junction in the centre of Birmingham. At Bordesley it divides to join up with other canals. Passes 1 mile east of Rickmansworth.
