department in central France. It lies south of Chinon and west
of Sainte-Maure de Touraine and is surrounded by mostly agricultural
land. The village was a 17th century model "new town",
a walled town created by Cardinal Richelieu with streets running
in parallel and at right angles. It is said to be the model on
which New York and most other American cities were constructed.
Within its walls he included the modest home of his childhood,
the château de Richelieu, surrounded by an ornamental moat
and large imposing walls enclosing a series of entrance courts
towards the town and, on the opposite side, grand axially-planned
formal vista gardens of parterres and gravel walks. Richelieu's
chateau is long gone but the chateau gardens, owned by Paris
University, are a delight, containing unusual plants and trees
from across the world. |
