|
 Pontefract lies in Yorkshire, the largest of all England's
counties. In the northwest of the county lies the Yorkshire Dales
National Park, a lovely patchwork of limestone hills, gentle
valleys and the high peaks of Whernside, Pen-y-ghent and Ingleborough.
The classical Yorkshire Dales spread to the north from the market
and spa towns of Settle, Skipton, Ilkley and Harrogate in North
Yorkshire, with most of the larger southern dales such as Ribblesdale,
Malhamdale and Airedale, Wharfedale and Nidderdale running roughly
parallel from north to south, and the more northerly dales including
Wensleydale, Swaledale and Teesdale running generally from west
to east. The North York Moors is the county's other national
park, with bleak upland moors and a magnificent rugged coastline.
To the southeast of the region lie the Yorkshire Wolds, formed
from chalk hills that arc from the Humber estuary west of Kingston
upon Hull up to the North Sea coast between Bridlington and Scarborough.
