Castle Howard / Jorvik

Castle Howard York YO60 7DA	Castle Howard is a stately home 15 miles (24 km) north of York. It is one of the grandest private residences in Britain, most of it was built between 1699 and 1712 for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, to a design by Sir John Vanbrugh. The single most significant event since the day it was built has been the calamitous fire of 1940, which destroyed the dome and nearly 20 rooms, as well as numerous treasures. For the next few years much of Castle Howard was open to the skies, its once splendid rooms gutted shells. George Howard, who inherited the house, after the deaths in action of his two brothers in World War Two, determined that the house should be lived in once more, and made the bold decision to recover Vanbrugh's architectural masterpiece. Richmond Castle / Easby Abbey

Richmond Castle North Yorkshire DL10 4QW Tel: 01748 822493	Breathtakingly sited on a rocky promontory above the River Swale, the great castle of Richmond is among the oldest Norman stone fortresses in Britain, begun in the decades after the Conquest. The towering keep, over 30 metres (100 feet) high and remarkably complete within, was added during the reign of Henry II in the 1170s: its roof provides splendid views over the clustered houses of the pretty market town. Traditionally King Arthur lies sleeping in a cavern beneath the castle. More certainly, conscientious objectors were imprisoned in the keep during World War I. Their story is told in an interactive display exploring Richmond's nine centuries of development, and woven into the contemporary Cockpit Garden. Created to reflect the castle's history and architecture, this tranquil haven of topiary, grasses and herbaceous borders has superb vistas over the River Swale. Easby Abbey North Yorkshire Road Access:1 mile SE of Richmond, off B6271	The substantial remains of an abbey of Premonstratensian 'white canons', probably most notable for its lavish roof-height refectory of c. 1300 and other monastic buildings.
