The Cleveland Way

The Cleveland Way is a 110 mile National Trail between Helmsley and Filey via Osmotherley, Saltburn, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar and Scarborough, around the North York Moors National Parks. It passes right through Whitby.

Surrounded by spectacular banks and ditches, the great medieval castle's impressive ruins stand beside the attractive market town of Helmsley. Helmsley Castle has recently undergone a thorough makeover by English Heritage, making it more accessible to a wide range of visitors. This includes a brand-new visitor centre also providing tourist information, an audio tour, and an imaginative hands-on exhibition in the mansion range. Displaying a fascinating array of finds from Civil War cannon balls to early tableware, this exhibition explores the social and domestic, as well as the military, aspects of the fortress. Pickering Castle is set in an attractive moors-edge market town. It is a classic and well-preserved example of an early earthwork castle refortified in stone during the 13th and 14th centuries, centred upon a shellkeep crowning an impressive motte. There is an exhibition in the chapel, and family-friendly books and activities.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway abbreviated NYMR is a popular tourist railway located in North Yorkshire. The steam train takes the tourists on an 18 mile (29 km) journey from a small market town of Pickering to the village of Grosmont. The train operates daily from about April to October, the departures are hourly. The railway was also used in numerous movies, including the Harry Potter movies, Heartbeat, Possession, and in the Sherlock Holmes television series just to name a few.
