	Penrith is an attractive market town originally built around a network of gates through which the townspeople would herd their livestock into the safety of the centre whilst the town was vigorously defended against the Scottish raiders who once terrorised this region. The gates have long gone but the names remain i.e. Middlegate, Stricklandgate. It was in the 9th century that the town of Penrith became the capital of Cumbria, a semi-independent state which until 1070 A.D. formed part of the Kingdom of Scotland and Strathclyde.

	Penrith - Travel by road - Penrith is about 1 mile east of Junction 40 of the M6 Motorway. The M6 Motorway travels north - south and connects to the M1 at Rugby then on to Carlisle. The M6 Toll is north of Walsall and Sutton Coldfield and bypasses the M6 the areas around Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Penrith is about 20 miles from Carlisle and 205 miles from Rugby.

	Penrith - Travel by road - Penrith is easily accessed from the M6 motorway at junction 40 where it crosses the eastwest A66 running from Workington to Middlesbrough.
