Welcome to our page of information, attractions and
places of interest around Orton. The Orton hotels
listed below are either in the town or we have given a rough
guide as to how far they are from Orton. From Orton you
can explore the beautiful Lake District National Park in the
county of Cumbria, the largest English National Park, with spectacular
mountain scenery, forest trails and lakeside paths around the
16 major lakes. We hope you enjoy your stay and find your ideal
accommodation.
The ancient and attractive village
of Orton is 8 miles south of Appleby-in-Westmorland, near the
M6 exit 38. Bridges cross and re-cross the two village streams
enclosing a small central green that shares space with white
washed and original stone coloured 17th and 18th century cottages.
Old wooden village stocks decorate the green and a 1604 door
lintel dates one house, Petty Hall. A 1717 stone house in the
village now serves as a tearoom, providing food using traditional
recipes. In 1809 a grammar school was established and a Wesleyan
chapel was built in 1833. Orton Hall is a grade II listed Jacobean
mansion, built of stone in 1662 and is now a self-catering establishment
for travellers.
