Accommodation in North Yorkshire

Almost all of the North Yorks Moors, from the Hambleton and Cleveland hills in the west to the cliff-edged coastline in the east, is protected by one of the country's finest national parks. The North Yorks Moors themselves are lonely, heather-covered, flat-topped hills cut through by steep-sided valleys and giant cultivated forests. Barrows and ancient forts are reminders of its early settlers, Neolithic and later, mingling on the moors with Roman remains, stone crosses of early Christians and the ruins of great monasteries. Helmsley, Thirsk and Pickering are the main market towns, Helmsley is the start of the 110-mile Cleveland Way, a route that follows the northern rim of the moors and the North Yorkshire coast.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway attracts many visitors, connecting Pickering with Grosmont 18 miles to the north through the superb scenery of the roadless Newtondale. The coastal towns offer old-fashioned holiday resorts at Scarborough and Whitby, and fishing villages with smuggling traditions such as the picturesque Robin Hood's Bay and Staithes.
