The North
East of England originally included Northumberland, Tyne
and Wear, County Durham, Cleveland, but is now defined as County
Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, and Tees Valley. The
region is rich in history and heritage and has beautiful stretches
of spectacular rugged coastline designated as Heritage Coast.
The highest point in the region is The Cheviot, in Northumberland,
at 815m. The breathtaking countryside features many ancient monuments
and vibrant towns and cities. Northern England is home
to numerous castles, including Bamburgh, Raby, Dunstanburgh,
Tynemouth, Lindisfarne and Alnwick. Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland,
Durham and Middlesbrough all offer fantastic shopping. Photo: Riverside
