Tantallon
Castle, North Berwick, East Lothian EH39 5PN. Tel: 01620 892
727. Tantallon Castle stands on a rocky headland surrounded by
cliffs overlooking Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth. It was the
seat of the Douglas Earls of Angus, one of the most powerful
baronial families in Scotland. In the late 14th century, they
built a great stone curtain across a rocky promontory, with lofty
towers and halls. Tantallon served as a noble fortification for
more than 3 centuries and endured frequent sieges. During Cromwell's
invasion in 1651 it suffered heavy damage. It passed into the
care of the State in 1924, and is now looked after by Historic
Scotland. About 2 miles
