The beautiful scenery of
Northern Ireland is it's main attraction and tourists are drawn
to the rural ares of the causeway coast, the Lakes of Fermanagh,
the Glens of Antrim and the mountains of Mourne. Lough Neagh
and the wild Sperrin Mountains are equally attractive but less
well known walking areas, and the Ulster Way is one of Ireland's
best long - distance footpaths.
The North has plenty of
museums and a fine collection of stately homes and gardens.
Belfast is mainly a Victorian
city, it's civic architecture was much admired by the late Sir
John Betjeman. In the centre
of the region are the Lakeland Counties - Cavan and Monaghan
near the Northern Ireland border, and Westmeath, Laois, Roscommon
and Longford. The most significant geographical feature is the
River Shannon, the longest river in the British Isles. It carves
it's way through the flood plains and water meadows of several
counties and provides recreation and scenic interest.
