Stapeley

The Sandbach Crosses (Photo right) are two
heavily carved Saxon stone crosses located in the town of Sandbach.
They are believed to date from the 9th century, to commemorate
the advent of Christianity in the Kingdom of Mercia about 653
A.D. during the reign of the Saxon King Penda. They are decorated
on all faces with carved figures, animals and vine scrolls. The
taller cross shows biblical scenes and has a mutiliated head.
The shorter cross has a truncated shaft with the mutilated head
of another cross. About

Cholmondeley Castle Gardens, Chlomondeley,
Malpas SY14 8AH - Tel: 01829 720 383. Extensive ornamental gardens
dominated by a romantic Gothic Castle, built in 1801 of local
sandstone, with a beautiful Temple Water Garden, Rose Garden
and many mixed borders. The gardens at Cholmondeley Castle were
originally laid out when the 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley built
the castle between 1801 and 1804. About 8 miles west of Nantwich. |
