Although the area has been inhabited since neolithic times, Mildenhall is known today as the location of RAF Mildenhall, one of the United States Air Force's major bases in the UK, and the Mildenhall Air Show, the largest military organised air display in the world. The old town of Mildenhall centres around the market place with its 16th century hexagonal market cross, the town pump, St Mary's Church with its 12th and 13th century features and some spectacular carved angels high above the nave. In King Street is the Mildenhall Museum which has some excellent displays and information on the 'Mildenhall Treasure', a horde of 4th century Roman silver tableware found nearby.
