Riber
Castle overlooks the town and the country side around Matlock.
Designed and built by John Smedley in 1862 as his private residence,
the stone came from a local quarry. Smedley died before its completion
and his wife lived in it until she too died. The building was
then turned into a boys school , then in 1940 the MOD used it
as a storage depot. After this period it became Riber Castle
Wildlife Park, which closed in September 2000. The future of
the building has not yet been decided, although convertion into
apartments in a possibility. Overlooking
