There have been two centuries of tourism at Margate, at its peak

the Thames every day, to disembark at Margate's pier. Today there
are caves to explore, once used by local smugglers, the ancient
Shell Grotto, the long sandy beach, shops in the "old town",
Dreamland with its hair-raising rides, a local museum and many
