Mansfield's status as a market town dates back to 1227 when a Market Charter was granted by Henry III, followed by a grant of fair in 1337. The open air market is one of Britain's largest and complements the more recent shopping facilities. Dominating Mansfield's town centre skyline is the 15 arch viaduct which was built for the railway from Nottingham to Worksop.
