It was the scene of a battle commemorated in a 325-line fragment of an Anglo-Saxon poem The Battle of Maldon, describing the defeat and death of Ealdorman Byrhtnoth by the Vikings in 991. Maldon is famous for its salt, salt-making remains the same today as it did hundreds of years ago. The combination of low rainfall, strong winds, bright sunshine and low-lying marshland produces good salty water. Maldon is 8 miles east of Chelmsford, 14 miles SW of Colchester and 5 miles south of Witham.
