Attractions St. Mels Cathedral, Longford is a landmark building of 19th century Renaissance style, of grey limestone with a lofty steeple. The foundation stone taken from the original cathedral of St. Mel of Ardagh was laid by Bishop O'Higgins in 1840. The main body of the cathedral is Romanesque and was designed by John Benjamin Keane. It has wonderful mosaic floors and arched baroque ceilings. Its 60 metre high tower is visible all over Longford. Location: In the centre of Longford.

Attractions Old Garda Barracks, Longford. This is an impressive building with a neat tone facade, dated circa 1842, while nearby are the Victoria Cottages dating from 1846. These represent one of the few surviving buildings named after the British Royal Family. Location: In the centre of Longford.

Attractions Dominican Friary - In the old Templemicheal Glebe cemetery there are the remains of a small church believed to be the old Dominican Friary, erected in 1400. However, the original Friary is stated to have been on the site of the present St John’s Church of Ireland. Close to the old ruins are a few inscribed tombstones dating from the early 1700s.
