Lincluden Collegiate Church, Lincluden, Dumfries

banks of the beautiful River Nith is one of the finest examples
of medieval architecture in Scotland. Here are the remains of
a collegiate church and the accommodation for its canons founded
in 1389 by Archibald the Grim, 3rd Earl of Douglas, on the site
of an earlier nunnery. About

Twelve
Apostles Stone Circle, near Nithsdale, Dumfries. Twelve Apostles
is the largest stone circle in mainland Scotland and one of the
largest in Great Britain, with its maximum diameter of 88m. The
site is split by a hedge and contains eleven stones. About 9 miles
west of Lockerbie. |

Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace, The Arched House,
Ecclefechan, Lockerbie DG11 3DG. Tel: 01576 300666. The great
social historian Thomas Carlyle was born here in 1795. The interior
reflects life in the late 18th Century and contains collections
of portraits, manuscripts and personal belonging of Carlyle.
