The county is now divided into East and West Sussex and is bounded on the north by Surrey, east by Kent, south by the English Channel, and west by Hampshire. It is an area with a fertile coastal plain along which are scattered numerous resort towns including Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Seaford, Brighton, Shoreham-by-Sea, Worthing, Littlehampton and Bognor. The South Downs Way runs along the grassy ridge of the South Downs, giving splendid views over the countryside and the coast over the chalk cliffs of Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters.

Attractions The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, Mill Street, Arundel, West, Sussex, BN18 9PB. Tel: 01903 883355. The new visitor centre at Arundel is surrounded by ancient woodland and overlooked by the town's historic castle. The wetlands at Arundel are home to many rare species of wetland wildlife. Note: dogs are not allowed in WWT Centres, except for Guide Dogs. Charges apply. About 3 miles north of Littlehampton.

It is one of the Treasure Houses of England, and home to priceless works of art. Paintings and furniture, tapestries and stained glass, china and clocks, sculpture and carving, heraldry and armour in stunning room settings. Location: About 2 mile north of Littlehampton.

Arundel Castle

Fontwell Park is a diverse leisure venue that offers everything from horse racing to large outdoor events such as concerts. The Racecourse is undoubtedly one of the most intimate and friendly racecourses in the country. Location: About 6 miles north west of Littlehampton.

It is currently being restored (2006) to full working order. Still worth a visit and the tea rooms are open. About 3 miles west of Littlehampton.
