Lincoln is famed for its cathedral, the third largest church in England. The west front is a glorious site, a cliff-face of blind arcading and decorative carving. With its triple towers and sited on the top of a steep hill, Lincoln cathedral can be seen for miles across the flatlands of Lincolnshire. The "Up hill" part of the town is of most interest to the visitor with many historic remains. Lincoln Castle is a short walk from the cathedral itself, in the spacious grounds is the old red brick jail housing one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta. Lincoln has excellent shopping, entertainment and leisure facilities, making it ideal for a short break holiday. Lincoln has a wide variety of attractions in the Cathedral Quarter, the High Street and the Brayford Waterfront.

	Lincoln Cathedral, 4 Priorygate, Lincoln LN2 1PL. Tel: 01522 561600. The county's greatest attraction has 3 great towers that dominate the city and can be seen from miles around. The central tower stands 271 ft high, the second highest in the country after Salisbury Cathedral. Built on the orders of William the Conqueror, construction began in 1072. 	Lincoln Castle is an impressive 11th century stone motte and bailey fortress, built on the site of the original Roman Fort of Lindum. The immense 12th century curtain wall is flanked by two mottes, two gates, and a large round tower "Cobb Hall". The Magna Carta, one of only four surviving originals sealed by King John after his meeting with the Barons at Runnymede in 1215, is now housed within Lincoln Castle.
