Leek is a little
Staffordshire mill town, sitting on a broad low hill in a curve
of the River Churnet.
A market is held weekly on the ancient cobbles of the large market
square, complemented by the thriving indoor Butter market at
the 17th century Butter Cross. The great silk mills of the last century
are still here, now mostly antique shops, and between the mills
you'll find rows of small specialist shops.
The architect William
Sugden designed the many distinctive buildings which give Leek
its characterful appearance. The town
has modern schools, an excellent shopping centre that includes
a new pedestrianised area and the traditional open market. Recreational
facilities include many parks and open spaces, including tennis
and squash courts, two golf courses, bowling greens, running
track, cricket and football pitches. Leek also has a large indoor
swimming pool. |
