Bed and breakfast in Lanark |
|
Bed and breakfast in Lanark. Lanark is one of the
most important towns in the Clyde Valley, and has a bustling
market, one of Scotland's largest farming markets. Lanark lies
high on the east bank of the River Clyde, close to its confluence
with the Mouse Water. Its strategic location guarding the Clyde
Valley was first recognised by the Romans, who built a fortification
on what is now known as Castle Hill, an outcrop south west of
the centre of the town which drops steeply into the valley. Lanark
is perhaps best known for nearby New Lanark, a complex of cotton
mills built along and powered by the River Clyde complete with
its own village, still providing people with homes in the midst
of a World Heritage Site. Lanark's local hero is William Wallace,
the hero of the Braveheart film. Also see Lanark.
