The Lake District is renowned
for it's high mountains and craggs, superb
lakes, beautiful valleys and remote western coastline.
The popular towns of Keswick,
Kendal and Bowness offer plenty of attractions for visitors,
with Grassmere once home to Wordsworth and
Coniston home to Ruskin.
Ullswater, Windermere &
Coniston Water offer steamer trips and cruises,
while Ambleside is a centre for climbers and walkers. The Cumbrian
mountains are not particularly high - none reach 1000 metres (3280') - but they are much more
dramatic than their height would
suggest. The serious walker should attempt Striding Edge
on Helvellyn, Scafell Pike, Skiddaw and
the Old Man of Coniston.
