Elizabeth Gaskell lived in the town, portrayed in her famous
novel, Cranford. Edward "Highwayman" Higgins, a Knutsford
gentleman by day and a notorius robber by night is another well
known character from Knutsford as is Trumpet Major Smith who
sounded the famous "charge" into the valley of death
at Balaclava. The town has "ginnels, cobbles and courtyards"
to explore from "Top Street" to "Bottom Street",
boutiques, antiques shops, purveryors of wines, art galleries,
restuarants, coffee houses and inns. The town was designated
