- The Moot Hall
- Aldeburgh
|
- The Moot Hall was once, as long
ago as the middle of the 16th century, in the centre of Aldeburgh.
By the beginning of the 17th century houses were being lost to
the sea and a hundred years later there was little more to the
East of the Moot Hall than there is today, it is now only a few
yards from the beach. The Moot Hall is now the meeting place
of the Town Council and, upstairs, a small, but interesting,
museum.

- A sculpture of a scallop
shell commemorating the life of composer Benjamin Britten on
the beach at Aldeburgh. Sculptor Maggi Hambling said the 12-foot
(3.7-meter) steel scallop shell on Aldeburgh's windswept beach
is a fitting tribute to the composer of the operas "Peter
Grimes" and "Billy Budd," who lived in the town
and loved its rugged North Sea coast.

- Snape Maltings is a unique
collection of granaries and malthouses nestling beside the River
Alde. Shops, galleries and restaurants fill the old buildings
where local barley was once malted for the brewing industry.
The present owners, the Gooderham family, bought the Maltings
in the 1960s and set about its gradual restoration and rejuvenation.
In 1967 Snape Maltings Concert Hall was opened as a venue for
the Aldeburgh Festival, the brainchild of composer Benjamin Britten
and tenor Peter Pears.

Standing in the heart of Norfolk's
undulating fields, the restored and working Bircham Windmill
looks as it did over 100 years ago. Over 300 mills once ground
corn for horse and cattle feed and bread making in Norfolk. Bircham
Mill is considered one of the best still remaining - it is the
only windmill in working order in the area open to the public.
Many items of interest are on the ground floor for visitors to
see. When possible on windy days the sails turn the milling machinery
inside and visitors can climb the five floors up to the fan stage.Gift
