Kendal is a grey limestone town with narrow yards and lanes of weavers cottages, branching off the main street. There were once about 150 of these yards in Kendal, often named after the owner of the main house. Kendal is a historical town with many attraction and is famous for its mint cake. The hilltop ruin of Kendal Castle dominates and overlooks the town. From here you can enjoy views over the town. Kendal has much to offer in the way of shops, pubs and restaurants, and was once voted the best place to live in England. 	Abbot Hall Art Gallery & Museum, Kendal, Cumbria LA9 5AL Tel: 01539 722 464 - Abbot Hall is a Grade I Listed Georgian building in a beautiful setting on the banks of the River Kent, surrounded by a park and overlooked by the ruins of Kendal Castle. There are collections of modern works in the upstairs galleries while downstairs, 18th century paintings can be seen in their period setting, alongside furniture and objets d'art of the time. There is a collection of society portraits of the day including key works by George Romney(1734-1802), who served his apprenticeship in Kendal. In the centre of Kendal.
	Levens Hall, Kendal, Cumbria LA8 0PD Tel: 01539 560 321 - The Hall is a magnificent Elizabethan mansion built around a 13th century pele tower. It is the family home of the Bagots and contains a collection of Jacobean furniture, fine paintings, the earliest English patchwork and many beautiful objects. About 4 miles from Kendal .
	Sizergh Castle & Garden, Sizergh, nr Kendal, Cumbria LA8 8AE - Tel: 015395 60951 - A medieval house extended in Elizabethan times, with gardens, two lakes and a superb rock garden. There are short walks from the castle to dramatic viewpoints over Morecambe Bay to the Lake District fells. Sizergh Castle is a National Trust property. About 3 miles from Kendal .
	A local delicacy for which the town is famous is Kendal Mint Cake, consisting of sugar and peppermint oil, a solid confection known to sustain the hill walkers and mountain climbers attracted to the area.
	Lake Windermere is the largest natural lake in England and according to Wordsworth, "None of the other Lakes unfold so many fresh beauties". Rowboats are available for hire, with stylish steamers and vintage cruisers to Lakeside in the south and Waterhead at the northern end. There is a ferry service across the lake to Sawrey giving access to the western side and to Beatrix Potter's former home at Hill Top. About 7 miles from Kendal .
