The Auvergne is the Massif Central's
lush vocanic core with crater lakes and hot springs. To the east
are the mountain ranges of Forez, Livardois and Velay, and to
the west are the giant chains of extinct volcanoes, the Monts
Domes, Monts Dore and the Mons du Cantal. The Auvergne offers
outdoor activities whatever the season, hiking in summer to skiing
in winter. It also has some of France's most beautiful Romanesque
churches, medieval castles and Renaissance palaces. The region
consists of 4 departments: Allier, Puy-de-Dome, Cantal and Haute-Loire. |
